Behind the Aldori’s discrete
farmhouse façade lies an avant-garde interior where imagination
has been allowed to roam free.
The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
is a well-preserved natural beauty spot that has wound its path from Guernica
to Mundaka since ancient times; its name means “wild boar river”.
|
Once inside
the house, the first surprise is a tapestry of Kennedy and the White House
hanging in the simple dining room. The family are used to explaining that
this is personal tribute from José Luis Pértica, the paternal
grandfather, to his time spent in the United States merchant navy; he even
made it as far as Vietnam. |
Pieces of family history
are dotted all around this hotel, which has been designed to accommodate
guests with limited mobility. Among the collection of eye-catching decorative
features are a back-lit alabaster headboard, famous song lyrics on the
walls and giant copies of the ship boarding passes used by Aunt Maria Rosa
on her return journey from New York to Bilbao in 1947. Outside, the surrounding
forest gently envelops the hotel in a sea of green.
